Health Benefits of Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is a plant native to Australia that has been used for thousands of years for the treatment of a variety of conditions. One of my favorite benefits doesn’t even really have anything to do with the chemical components of the plant but the mental space it can put us in.
It’s like when we stop to smell the roses. You have paused a moment of your day to embrace something beautiful. By putting Eucalyptus in your shower, it is something new that we will notice every time we enter. When I am showering and I see the eucalyptus I try to remember to pause, close my eyes and take several deep, slow breaths in and out, taking myself away from real world worries for just a moment. This allows my brain to reset and my mind can be calm and at peace, creating a zen shower experience.
The steam from your shower will extract the Eucalyptus oil allowing us to inhale a small amount of it. When we inhale the steam, eucalyptus acts as a decongestant which can relieve sinus headaches, sore throats, and many other symptoms. By having the eucalyptus in your shower, your sickness is likely to heal faster1.
Where to Find
Trader Joes always has a great selection of Eucalyptus but if you do not have one near, most grocery stores with a floral section should have some.
How to Hang Eucalyptus in your shower
Once you have brought that potent stuff home, it is ready to transform your shower.
I like to tie some twine around the stems before cutting the rubber bands. This way I minimize the mess I am making and make it easier for them to tie them all together. I do twine instead of the rubber band just to make it a little more aesthetically pleasing but if you don’t mind the twine then girl more power to you. I then cut off about an inch of the stem.
Next you have two options. If the top of your shower head is stable you can pull the bundle in half and plop that girl right on top of the shower head. I personally like to hang mine below the running water by tying a loop in the end big enough to go over the shower head and then tie it to the stems of the bundle.
Replace the eucalyptus every one to two months. I treat it like a ritual where I head to Trader Joes for some self care. It will definitely last longer but after a month you begin to smell a bit less of the scent and I am here for that good smelling plant.
Next step is to hop into that steamy shower and embrace those amazing benefits. Don’t forget to take some deep breaths.
